God Gives a Much-Needed Tune-Up

I was feeling like everything was off. Couldn’t seem to anchor myself, even though I kept telling God, “You’re my anchor.” Just couldn’t seem to get my bearings. It’s normal to feel this way after an upheaval, like having to walk out on a full-time job because the focus of the workplace has changed too much to bear. I couldn’t put words to it, so my prayer was, “God, please help.”

Immediately, I saw a text from one of my friends, inviting our friend group to join her for lunch. It seems several of us were having the same kind of morning. Just hanging out with my friend group always gives me a much needed boost. But God had even more planned.

One friend started telling us about creating a music and worship room in her home. She invited us to come see the beginnings. That’s when we begged her to play us a worship tune on her guitar.

We had only planned to stay a few minutes. But more than an hour of pure worship, many tears, and much joy later, we felt so much lighter than when we walked in. God used that time to lift some burdens off our hearts and remind us of what it feels like to be anchored in Him, no matter how directionless the wind and seas, even if our rudder seems to be broken.

We talked about bringing different musical instruments to this space in the future. Last year, I got a ukelele but have barely touched it. I had this all-consuming job that gave me little free time and much exhaustion. But even after leaving that job, I haven’t felt inspired to pick up the ukelele. Until yesterday.

The instrument was more out of tune than anything I’ve heard. It took quite a bit of coaxing just to get it into range of being tuned. That’s when it hit me what God had done earlier in the day: He brought me back into tune. He gave me a tune-up. He did that for all of us, in one way or another.

My circumstances hadn’t changed. But I felt like I was finally resonating with His sound. I was once again an instrument ready for Him to play. God used friendship, shared tears and joy, and worship time to retune each of us.

If you are feeling disoriented or rudderless in any way, ask Him for a tune-up. He knows exactly what you need.
