Book Editing Services

Since 2003, I have enjoyed the privilege of working on 42 books as editor or author.

I offer the following services for my clients’ book manuscripts:

  • Non-fiction books: Full edit (substantive editing followed by line editing). $7 per double-spaced manuscript page.
  • Add-on: Self-publishing prep for non-fiction books. Available only as an add-on to full editing service. $1,000 add-on fee.
  • Novels: Line editing with light critique. $5 per double-spaced manuscript page.
  • Transcript-to-book: A service that takes your book all the way from typing your audio transcripts, organizing them into your draft manuscript, working with you to prompt additional writing as needed, editing your manuscript, and self-publishing prep. Available for non-fiction only. $3,500 flat fee.

$300 minimum on all book editing projects.

*Page rate refers to a standard manuscript page, 8.5 x 11 size, 1-inch margins, 12 pt serif font, double line spacing, average of 300 words per page. To get your page count, divide your total manuscript word count by 300.

Book editing fee includes a 30-minute Zoom follow-up, after all editing is completed, when you can ask any questions you may have specifically about the edits.

Novelists, please note: For novels, I offer line editing only, on a completed novel manuscript (along with a light critique). I do not offer developmental editing for novels. Before you receive line editing, your novel needs to receive a developmental edit from an editor who specializes in that process for novels.

For novel writers, I also highly recommend that you participate in at least three novel-writing workshops, attend at least two novel writers’ conferences, and hone your craft before you start along the editing process.

For self-publishing prep, please note: For my non-fiction book clients choosing to self-publish on Amazon, I offer an add-on service that includes basic prep and formatting of your manuscript for self-publishing.

This process begins after you have made your final editing changes. I provide a final round of editing to be sure your book is ready for self-publishing, basic formatting, review of proof copy, input of final proof changes, editing of your back cover copy and author bio, and guidance on your self-publishing process.

You will need to provide your own book cover, provide any graphics in the required resolution and dimensions, and properly research and cite any quotations used in your book. I will gladly work with your graphic designer to make sure everything goes smoothly. Amazon offers free templates to design your own book cover, but most authors are happiest when hiring the services of a book cover designer.

I also recommend that you be prepared to hire someone to do a final proof of your book, the very last step prior to publishing. This needs to be someone who has never seen the manuscript before. (The human eyes/brain will literally auto-correct typos after reading material multiple times.) Your proofreader needs to understand what final proofing means. I am happy to work with your proofreader to ensure this process goes smoothly.

For transcript-to-book service, please note: I will take your non-fiction book from audio transcript all the way through developmental and line editing, and on to prep for self-publishing on Amazon.

You will need to provide your own book cover, designed to Amazon’s specifications (or use one of Amazon’s templates), and I also recommend that you hire a proofreader to do a final proof. This needs to be someone who has not looked at the manuscript until that moment, and who understands what a final proof entails. I will gladly work with the graphic designer you hire to do your cover (or with you, if you choose to use a template) as well as your final proofreader to ensure all goes smoothly and meets all necessary specifications.

Expect three to six months, on average, for the entire transcript-to-book process to be completed.

Add-On: Collateral material: Authors often write short e-books related to their book topic, to be offered as free downloads on their website. They might also create other informative web content directly related to their book. For my book editing clients who would like me to edit those materials as well, I offer this editing a la carte at $35 per hour.

Please contact me to learn more or to discuss your book project.

God bless,

Janet Eriksson

“I have had the privilege of working with Janet on several different writing projects. She has always come in way above the grade of what I have asked for or even imagined. She is an accomplished writer and has amazing experience in the field of publishing/editing. Her creative perspective is a rare gift to find in someone of such a broad band of intellect. Not only has she served me well in every experience but she is also very professional and a pleasure to work with. She has the gift of bringing words to life. I highly recommend her in any capacity of the written word.”

— Kerri Johnson, Founder, Coordinator & Spiritual Director, Transformations, Inc. (aka Kerri Johnson Ministries); Author of Are You Feeling Stuck?, Symphony of Heart & Mind and Intense Fellowship

“Once upon a time, I was an insecure writer who had written a drama with aliens and didn’t know how to improve or refine it for mass consumption. Then God sent me Janet. Not only was Janet very insightful in her editing, she was also very encouraging, and my confidence and writing has grown because of our partnership. I can’t wait to work with her again!”

— Kathryn Wyvern, Author of The Red Days

“Janet is the best editor and more. Through my years of serving as a university professor, wrestling official and coach, as well as mayor, city councilman, and county commissioner, I also wrote 1,600+ articles, published my own syndicated columns, created a collection of motivational slogans, and wrote scripts for my radio broadcasts.

“Janet helped me turn all of these writings into four published books. I handed her all my notebooks that contained several hundred articles and scripts written by typewriter. She typed them into the computer, organized them by topic and presentation, edited them, keyed in the final proofs, and took these manuscripts through the process of being published as four paperback books on Amazon. Now I can share these motivational books with a new generation of athletes and leaders.”

— Dr. John Raber, Author of 200+ Mind/Body Explosions, Unwrap the Sticky Wrapper, Sweet Honey ‘Er Sour Vinegar and 800+ Marvelous Motivational Quotes

“Working with Janet is a dream come true; extremely knowledgeable and experienced, a wonderful writer with much care and compassion for the work as well as the client. So very easy to work with and always open to suggestions. Would love to work with her again.”

Ron Escoffery, Financial Coach, Real Estate Coach & Mentor, Personal Development Coach, Entrepreneur, Author & Speaker

“Our company has hired Janet on a few projects now, the most recent being our LVT cleaning for our website page & blog post. Our site was indexed within a week of adding her writing and we received a call for a job days later. We continue to grow as a company because we chose Janet, an incredibly gifted freelance writer. We plan to continue utilizing her writing for all of our needs. Thank you Janet!!!”

— Kelly Galiszewski, DrySteam

“I had the privilege of working closely with Janet for two years. She was in charge of a writing lab for teenagers who were participating in a Christian residential facility program. Many of these students were several grade levels behind academically; many were considered very reluctant learners. Daily she encouraged, taught, and worked with small groups of students.

“The work the students were able to produce under her leadership was exceptional! Students made a school devotional, worked on writing their testimony, wrote pieces of non-fiction, and created entries for a school magazine. I saw their writing, their confidence, and their productivity dramatically increase over time. The skills she taught the students greatly helped them progress both academically and emotionally. She was deeply missed by students and staff alike when she was called to other fields.”

— Mary-Lee Reynolds, Former Language Arts Teacher, Eagle Ranch School

“I have had the pleasure of knowing Janet for over 10 years. During that time, I have enjoyed reading many of her writings, including books, testimonies, and blogs. Each year that we travel to Guatemala on mission trips, Janet writes for our blog site. Not only is her writing enjoyable, it is also heartfelt. With her intellect she brings a great historical view. But what is most enjoyable for me is that Janet puts her heart and soul into her writing. When you read the blogs it’s as if you were there yourself. She allows you to picture it and to feel it. She has been given a talent and is able to use it in many ways! I enjoyed being on the end to receive the blessings.”

— Mary Fowler, Co-Leader, Guatemala Mission Team

“Friends: Going down memory lane is sometimes a good thing to do. I have always loved writing but I never seemed to get anywhere with the process. I wasn’t really secure about what I was trying to do.

“In my late fifties I felt the need to start writing again but I didn’t want to just spin my wheels, so to say. I was participating on a writer’s site and saw an advertisement Janet Eriksson had regarding a writing class she was teaching. I finally decided to contact her and see what was involved. For me, it was one of the best things I have ever done.

“Janet is a very personable and fun spirited person, she enjoys life. She is very knowledgeable about her craft of writing and editing. She coached me through my first two e-books and built a confidence in myself that I had never experienced before.

“I was able to see her work firsthand when she held a writer’s conference in our town. I was impressed by her thoroughness and efficiency throughout the event. Her integrity was above reproach. When she does a job for you, you can be assured you will get your money’s worth.

“She had an online magazine, Reflections that I was privileged to have several articles published in. Her seeing my potential as a writer and her willingness to invest her time to help me reach my goal has been so fulfilling.

“Not only is she very talented at her crafts with writing and editing, she is an awesome friend. She will always give you her best because everything she does, she does as unto the Lord.”

— Janie King, Writer
