The Courage to Change: Book Review

I read The Courage to Change: Saying Goodbye to Good Enough and Embracing the Promise of What Can Be by Joyce Meyer at the perfect time, as I am navigating several major life changes. Even if I weren’t in the midst of big changes, this book would be helpful in any season, with practical, biblical tools for embracing spiritual growth and God’s best for life.

Change is hard, but we can navigate in peace when we remember God never changes and His word never changes.

Sometimes we choose change because God is prompting us. Sometimes change seems to come out of nowhere. Either way, we can seek God for how He wants us to navigate the circumstances.

When we are reluctant to change, we risk missing the cool things God has planned for our future. And He gives us the help we need to change if we will let Him.

This book dives into key themes of change:

•How to navigate the duration of change, including the part in between what’s behind and what’s ahead.
•How to stay in peace during upset.
•The role of forgiveness in letting go.
•Recognizing how our thoughts affect our actions, words, and expectations.
•How gratitude impacts the process of change.
•How to choose faith over fear during a time of change.

If you’re going through any kind of life change right now, this book is a much-needed guide and encouragement. If you’re not facing a big change, this book will help you navigate how to live and grow in your walk with God and in life situations. So many types of change are highlighted, including the ongoing navigation of ages and stages as well as spiritual growth and transformation. This book is a help during life changes as well as a guide for the journey of life.

In typical Joyce Meyer fashion, scripture is woven through each chapter. The author doesn’t just cite scripture but also explains biblical stories and references, to increase understanding.

The pullout quotes are helpful for remembering and applying key points.

Each chapter ends with questions for individual reflection or group discussion—great for self-study or book clubs. The questions are practical, to help us move forward with what we are learning. Some questions help us interact with scripture in practical situations. Other questions look at circumstances from a God-focused perspective.

The book is filled with practical wisdom, action steps, and things to practice from a biblical basis. The author walks us through specific areas of application.

The author digs into the nitty gritty of growth with God, what that looks like, and how we move forward in practical ways.

She builds on what we are learning by adding each new point onto the foundation from previous chapters.

The author shares personal examples to illustrate key concepts, in a way that’s helpful but not overdone.

The author shares how to look for things that might trip us up during times of change and how to navigate those areas. It’s reassuring that we can grow in good ways even during unexpected or undesired change.

I am grateful The Courage to Change: Saying Goodbye to Good Enough and Embracing the Promise of What Can Be by Joyce Meyer came along at a time of upheaval and change in my life. My sense of peace grew as I read through each chapter, and that made a tangible difference for me. When this season of change is over, I will go back and review all the sections I highlighted, as these will provide a valuable guide for continued growth, transformation, and life.
