In Busyness, Rest

December is a busy time of year. Wrapping things up—work and gifts. Preparing for the new year. Holiday plans and schedules. Lots of events. Crowds, traffic. The sense there’s not enough time to get it all done. Concerns about how we will feel starting January depleted—and the desire to get there so we can leave all this holiday craziness behind.

In the midst of busyness, carve out some time and space to rest. It might just be a few minutes, here and there, throughout the day. Maybe getting up five minutes early or staying up five minutes later. Just time to breath. To pause. Selah.

This is an amazing spiritual time of year when we turn our thoughts to the birth of Jesus. Much of the biblical passages about the coming of Jesus focus on waiting in expectation. It’s not a season to miss out on. I encourage keeping a restful focus—throughout the season—on what it means that the Messiah came to earth.

Most of us will experience a moment of awe on Christmas Eve, as we reflect on the birth of Jesus. The miracle that He is. The life that He gives. It almost takes your breath away.

But let’s not wait for just that one moment. Let’s create moments throughout the season to rest in God’s presence. To be in awe of His holiness and His creation. To breathe in the midst of busyness.

Let’s take some quiet time to focus on what Jesus has done … what He still does today … what He will do for our eternity. To reflect on the magnitude of His love. His vision. Restoration, renewal. Change. Abundant life He brings. A beautiful kingdom with no end. And prayers for folks who don’t know how much they need Him.

December is busy, for sure. But it also offers a deep well of peace and reflection. A chance to be amazed all over again at the day Jesus was born in our midst. The day everything changed. The day our new forever began.

Shalom.
