Bible Refreshment

I’ve been feeling kind of down because of the winter weather. It’s not just the winter storms rolling through. The constant nighttime lows in the 20s are starting to wear on me.

I’ve lived up north, where this relentless cold is expected. But here in the South, we usually get a break here and there. No breaks this January.

On a recent morning, I was praying and journaling with God, asking what I should be focusing on. Obviously I should be focusing on Him, but I was asking what to do with my day.

I felt led to get a head start on a writing project that involved first reading a book of the Bible. Just immersing myself in the words of scripture lifted my spirit. It felt like the best refreshment.

Even though I was doing the project for work—a requirement—it felt like I had taken a delightful break, a rest from the cold weather that was weighing me down. The words of scripture were like a tall glass of water on a thirsty day.

I read through the book three times in different translations and only stopped short of a fourth read-through because I had to prepare for a group meeting.

As I closed the Bible to get ready for the next thing, I realized how much God’s Word had breathed new life into me. It felt transforming. It was a good reminder that when I’m feeling low, the Bible is a source of refreshment.

How about you? Have you noticed the way the Bible can lift you up when you’re feeling weary? Take a moment today to read a favorite Bible verse and see how it makes you feel. May God bless your day.
