I was doing a lesson about God’s creation in my favorite Bible study app, Wize Peeps.
They mentioned two Bible verses about how God’s creation gives us a glimpse of who God is:
Romans 1:20:
“For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse.” (NIV)
Acts 17:26-27:
“From one man he made all the nations, that they should inhabit the whole earth; and he marked out their appointed times in history and the boundaries of their lands. God did this so that they would seek him and perhaps reach out for him and find him, though he is not far from any one of us.” (NIV)
Together, these verses about creation show us things about God’s character—including that He wants us to seek and find Him, and He put the means of doing so right in front of us and all around us.
The Wize Peeps app suggested an exercise that I chose to try:
Take a close look at something in nature and spend a few minutes with it, noting what it tells you about God.
I chose to look closely at my one-year-old Yorkie, Josiah. God created him exactly when I needed him. That alone tells me something about how God is well aware of our needs before we are.
Here’s what else I see when I look at Josiah:
God’s power: creating intricate, life-giving cells that form a puppy that grows up into a dog, capable of running, eating, jumping, barking, swimming, sniffing, napping.
God’s artistry: designing such a beautiful creature with different colors and patterns of hair and such a precious design.
God’s comfort: creating a dog that cuddles with me to both receive and give comfort.
God’s intelligence: designing something so complex as a living mammal with all its life-giving systems intricately woven and working together.
God’s humor: creating a dog that tilts his head to look at me with those big, curious eyes, and then flings himself across the couch, paws straight up, to pounce on me.
God’s generosity: designing such a diversity of canine species that would live and interact with humans when He didn’t have to provide anything like that.
From just a few minutes of paying close attention to Josiah, I can see and be reminded of a whole lot about God’s character.
What if we took regular time to look at nature all around us—and people too, including ourselves—to really appreciate and get a deeper sense of who God is?
What a great way to draw closer to Him and get His truth deeper into our being.
