Bible Verse
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart,
“And lean not on your own understanding;
“In all your ways acknowledge Him,
“And He shall direct your paths.”
Proverbs 3:5-6 NKJV
Reflection
I was sitting outdoors with a friend. My Yorkie was running around in the yard with his favorite doodle buddy. The doodle saw a car turning in and ran toward the driveway. My Yorkie followed.
The doodle knows his boundaries really well. He stopped at the edge of the driveway. My Yorkie kept moving closer to the driveway.
Most Yorkies don’t acknowledge boundaries. I don’t want him running on the driveway near approaching cars. He just doesn’t understand.
I called out, “Settle!”
He ignored me.
I got up and moved slowly toward him, pointing. “Settle.”
Still, he ignored me. He was captivated by the action in the driveway and kept edging closer to it.
“Settle.”
He looked at me, hesitated, looked back at the car, took a step.
I was almost up next to him. “Settle.”

Finally, he realized I was being serious. He dropped to the ground. I scooped him up and moved him to safety.
My friend said, “That’s how God is with us! We run head first into something we shouldn’t. He’s calling out, ‘Don’t do it. Settle!’”
She’s absolutely right. How many times does God try to redirect me, asking me to hold still and let Him help me? How long does it take me to listen, let alone respond? To settle. Let God direct my paths. Trust Him with where I should be in a given moment.
I was so glad when my dog settled and let me redirect him to safety. How much gladder must God be when we trust and submit to His direction of where He wants us to be: a much better situation than we would choose on our own.
Prayer
God, thank You for directing our paths, for calling us to “settle” and let You lead. Help us hear and respond to Your leading today. In Jesus’ name. Amen
